Way of the Warrior Review: Dokkodo – The Way of Walking Alone by Miyamoto Musashi 06.26.18

  1. Accept everything just the way it is.
  2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.
  3. Do not give preference to anything amongst things.
  4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world.
  5. Be detached from desire your whole life.
  6. Do not regret what you have done.
  7. Never be jealous.
  8. Never let yourself be saddened by the loss of objects and possessions.
  9. Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor others.
  10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love.
  11. Do not have likes or dislikes for things.
  12. Be indifferent to where you live.
  13. Do not pursue the taste of good food.
  14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need.  Do not to keep that which is of no use.
  15. Do not act following customary beliefs.
  16. Do not collect old weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful.
  17. Do not fear death.
  18. Do not seek to possess either goods or fiefs for your old age (fief is land).
  19. Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help.
  20. Do not abandon your good name, even if it means abandoning your own life.
  21. Never stray from the way.

The above 21 principles would be extreme difficult, if not impossible, to uphold at all times. Anthony finds some of the principles easy to follow and other difficult.  Living in Las Vegas makes it hard to follow number 13. Numbers 7 and 17 are great and fun, because they bring a sense of liberation and independence with them. Number 18 is impossible for some people.

If everyone followed number 20, there would be no war.  Could you imagine? War can stop, however, messages of world peace is an utopia or euphoric front/fake that enables wicked people to push their personal quest for power, e.g. socialism, communism, new world order, one world power, etc. What does number 21 “never stray from the way” mean to you?
